endhiran – the robot

Aug 05 2010

this is not a music review. not that I can do music reviews. not of ar rahman, in any case. this is just sharing my random delight of some songs and albums I listen.

as usual, because it is rahman, and because I am biased, and because I write like this, it may be a little nauseating and too sweet to read this.. but that’s OK with me.. you don’t need to apologize..

albums like ‘Sivaji – The Boss’ and ‘Varanam Aayiram’, are just pure gold. ‘vinnaithaandi varuvaayo’ had a couple of gems, which were futuristic music, I thought.’ Hosanna’ and ‘Omana Penne’.. not that Aaromale and Mannipaaya weren’t MINDBLASTING!

but this one is for Enthiran – the Robot.. the music released on July 31, 2010.. and here’s the gist of the songs I have been hearing ever since..

the below comments are what came to my mind, when I listened to the songs for the first time.. I have no idea how their actual visuals are.

  • Puthiya Manida Boomiku Vaa:
  1. the start of the song took me to the scene of Terminator and Mercury Man, coming back from the future and taking form.
  2. the song starts with a slow request (rahman’s daughter’s voice suits it), sort of futuristic tone, and picks up at 2:28 nicely… ohh yeah, SPB comes in.
  3. not the usual ‘throw the kitchen sink’ song. well-toned, argumentative and the super star’s couple of lines at 4:58, for the masses.. how does Vairamuthu always sneak in these lines?
  • Kaadhal Anukkal
  1. one of those songs which remind you of picking up a guitar and dancing by the beach with your girl..
  2. vijay prakash lends his voice for this.. and the guitars are very pleasant… add Shreya’s voice to this..
  3. and then there is the ‘airtel theme music’ like bit of rahman at 2:04…
  4. vairamuthu pens his style of comparing nature/unique observations, to people in love…
  • Irumbile Oru Irudayam
  1. I love it, when rahman sings a song.. dil se, arabi kadalorum, Mustafa Mustafa..
  2. I also like the lyrics of the song.. the robot struggling to express humanly moments of love.. with its techno lyrics (engine, battery, blue eyes, shut down, google search..)
  3. I just love the 3:15 to 3:30 and the similar second part.. subjectively earnest requests… with rahman..
  4. and I like kash n krissy’s voice n chauvinistic lyrics at 3:35…
  5. wiki tells me the filming happens in machi picchu for this song.. that ought to be good.
  • Chutti Dance.. Boom Boom Robot Da (the Instrumental)
  1. if you have a  car, or want to know what threshold makes your eardrums explode, this is the song… the introduction minute is blazing..
  2. I think it is Praveen mani and yogi B, and it’s nicely done..
  3. and there’s a surprise.. starts with a blaze, fuses into classical, changes to a rock and then comes the beautiful violin orchestra… then back to a detective music and back to classical fusion with beats like hell.. ahhh chuck it..
  • Arima Arima
  1. its like an emperor is being welcomed..grand music..  the lyrics fuses the praise for the super star and the context of a robot..  with an conversation with the girl..
  2. the background chant, ‘ivan perai sonnadum…’ reminds me of kings being welcomed with flowers thrown on the carpet as they walk..
  3. hariharan yells out ‘endhiran’ 8 tmes.. followed by an YES every time… intensity..
  4. its one of those argument song like, “Mudhalvane” where the time for the girl is being debated on.. the sweet voice of sadhana sargam with its painful conveyance..
  • Kilimanjaro
  1. I like like like this song.. it’s refreshing.. the drums, the ‘aaha aaha’ and finally the ‘ak kakko, adi kinnikozhi, ap pappo ennai pinnikodi’
  2. javed ali has a good voice.. and with Clinton, it’s better.
  3. the drum beats, background chants and middle tunes are all the more refreshing..
  • Boom Boom Robot Da
  1. yogi B starts with some booming and zooming.. you’ll chant it a day later..
  2. good lyrics at the start of the female part..
  3. and some funny ones at the second part.. which says, can’t a girlfriend be like you (robot), who can shut up with some button clicks.. can’t a boyfriend be like you (robot) who listens to me all the time.. (for real, I am assuming J)

maybe I am slow, or it is a knack rahman has, but the first time I listen to his music, nothing registers in me. I can’t make anything out of it..

then somewhere on the back of my mind, the tunes keep coming back. and then the more I listen to it, the more it unravels.. and then, 3 days result in billion hearings…

one thing is that it is a different sound track.. obviously! that’s what everybody says..
now this is just the musical treat.

when you add the visual treat of Shankar’s magnum opus way of doing things, and the presence of the ***** Super Star *****, you get the Holy Grail Wish of every south indian.

in other words, this movie hits the theatres on September 3, 2010..boy, am I not eager!

sivaji – the boss

Apr 01 2007

wrote this 3 days before the release of Sivaji – The Boss.. after listening to the soundtrack..it is way too late for publishing.. nevertheless…

  • Balleilakka

the intro song.. a very colorful fast paced foot tapping song, pertaining to rural lyrics & contrasting rural/urban lifestyles. nayantara adds to the color.. everything is good about the song.. i like the stress on ‘karisa kaadu’ from SPB in the course of the song..

  • Style.. Oru Koodai Sunlight

highlight of the song is the white rajni.. doesn’t sound right, right? :) i think this was shot in spain, with spanish/mexican style costumes.. very attractive song.. with the usual lyrical punch..

‘eppodhum pachchai tamizhan.. ippo naa vellai tamizhan..’ ( now i’m a white tamilian.. but always a true to the heart tamilian..)

  • vaaji vaaji vaaji.. en jeevan nee sivaji

ARR dishing out a peppy number is not news. Hariharan’s voice rendering a catchy tune is not news.

sometimes, good things come so frequently and predictably that they no longer seem good. hence I do not intend to describe this tune as the routine number by ARR.

some songs click on the first go… this is one of them. and it takes a lot to click with a majority. and I am sure this song has done that… no prizes for saying that. especially with Shankar, Rajni, ARR and a good number, in any case..

Vaaji is Horse in Sanskrit or Vaa (Welcome in Tamil) Ji (Respect in Hindi) or Wah-Ji (Applause)… whatever its intended to be…

i like madhusree’s line of  Vaaji Vaaji Vaaji.. En Jeevan Sivaji

  • Adiradi kaara machcha

for the metallic youth, listen to the clamorous ‘Adiradi kaara machcha‘.. (the video has reduced all the superheroes of the world to mere mortals.. ) it is a mega-star song with visual delight & physics defying portrayal.. well, thats a fan’s words.. others just call it a stupid song..

because, it is a whole james bond movie shot within a song..

  • ‘Sahara Saaral thoovudo

one heck of a melody, ‘ by Vijay Yesudas.. arr surpasses himeself, everytime, when it comes to melody.. theres also the more famous udit narayan version..

  • The BOSS

the theme song, background beats, pep-up score.. whatever you want to call it.. it is rocking.. aye sivaaji… it has the couplets and quadruplet (whatever is the word for 4) lines denoting the power of rajni.. i always feel good, when there are brilliant theme music/bits… remember MI themes..

now even before the release of the movie.. my cousin in my native place had a couplet sticker on his walls & doors..

  1. cell phone adicha ringu.. sivaji adicha sangu.. (roughly translating to.. a cell phone’s toll is a ring.. sivaji’s assault is a death bell)
  2. kanna, panninga thaan kootama povum, singon singalathaan povum.. (my dear, only pigs go in groups, a lion roams around alone..) he says this to a group gazilion villains.. go figure :)

what can you find here?

Apr 01 2007

i always believed, theres something divine, mysterious & timeless about music.

we all like music. not the greatest revelation of life. in fact not everyone likes the same tunes. we’re diverse. but then there’s always a bunch of songs which beat these barriers.

now, i can’t sing or dance or play music.. not that humanity would want that. but what i can do, is scribble my thoughts, when i listen to new stuff.

those would be purely my own thoughts, opined when i was getting sober. so they don’t hold good for arguments. every line may be gibberish to someone. thats okay with me :)

i enjoy listening.. and hope you folks too, enjoy your kind of music..
